Cambodia and Thailand Agree to Immediate and Unconditional Ceasefire
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
He stated the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand will begin at midnight local time today.
The Malaysian Prime Minister added that Cambodia and Thailand will hold a meeting tomorrow with regional commanders present.
Thailand’s acting Prime Minister, Prawit Wichayachai, met today with his Cambodian counterpart, Hun Manet, at Ibrahim’s residence in Putrajaya, south of Kuala Lumpur.
The latest military clashes between Cambodia and Thailand began last Thursday. Both sides accused each other of initiating the conflict. Reports indicate that at least 35 people have been killed so far, with more than 260 displaced.
Thailand and Cambodia are engaged in a longstanding dispute over a border area known as the “Emerald Triangle,” where their borders converge with Laos. This region contains several ancient temples.
This conflict has persisted for decades, resulting in violent military clashes more than 15 years ago and again in May this year. The most recent fighting started near two border temples located between Thailand’s Surin province and Cambodia’s oddar Meanchey province.
