Olliánov Responds to European Troika’s Threats Against Iran
Mikhail Ulyanov,Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, said Monday on the social media platform X that since 2022 until recently, the European troika blocked negotiations to revive the Joint Extensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),according to webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency.
Ulyanov added that after three years of obstruction, these three European countries now insist that “time is running out” and demand a new agreement be reached by the end of August under the threat of sanctions snapback mechanisms. He questioned whether this approach can be called diplomacy.
This comes hours after Jean-Noël Barrot, France’s Foreign Minister, who spoke just days after the first meeting between the European troika and Tehran following Israel’s and the United States’ aggression against Iran, once again threatened Iran with activating the snapback mechanism.
In an interview with “face de Nation,” Barrot responded to questions about iran possibly pursuing secret nuclear activities following its 12-day conflict with Israel and perhaps moving toward building nuclear weapons without global detection. He stated: “We still face this risk. Together with Germany and Britain, we have clearly stated that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons.”
Without mentioning Washington’s unilateral and unlawful withdrawal from the JCPOA, Barrot claimed: “In recent weeks-and in close coordination with US officials-we have contacted iranian authorities to convey our expectations. A decade ago we reached an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program considerably limiting its nuclear capabilities. But as then conditions have changed and Iran has violated all commitments made when signing that agreement.”
