Thai Army and Prime Minister Conflict Over Cambodia’s Alleged Ceasefire Violation
the Thai army claimed that Cambodia launched attacks on several areas inside Thailand only hours after an official ceasefire was declared between the two countries, according to webangah News Agency citing Mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera.
Wintai Suvari, spokesperson for the thai military, stated that Thailand conducted a proportionate retaliatory attack in self-defense.
He added, “At the time of implementation of the agreement, Thai forces detected movements by Cambodian troops and their armed assault on multiple locations within Thai territory. This constitutes a purposeful violation of the agreement and a clear attempt to undermine mutual trust. Thailand was compelled to respond appropriately and exercised its legitimate right to defend itself.”
cambodia and Thailand had agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following talks hosted by Malaysia. The aim was to end fighting in disputed areas along their 800-kilometer shared border. The clashes-which began last Thursday-have resulted in at least 38 deaths and displaced about 300,000 people.
Porntham Watchayachai, interim Prime Minister of Thailand, downplayed Cambodia’s breach of the truce. He said he spoke with the Cambodian defense minister this morning before scheduled negotiations between military commanders from both sides.
He emphasized that “there is currently no tension, and the situation is calm.”
