Germans Fully Support Intensified Pressure on Tel Aviv
A survey conducted by Forsa for the magazine Stern shows that over 70 percent of Germans support increased pressure on Israel to address the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, according to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Anadolu.
About 74 percent of respondents, referring to what is described as israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, expressed a desire for the federal German government to adopt a stricter position toward Tel Aviv.
The survey also highlights a clear ideological divide based on political affiliation: approximately 94 percent of supporters from the left Party and 88 percent from the Green Party favor greater pressure on Israel.
Among backers of the ruling center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its ally, the Christian Social union (CSU), as well as supporters of the Social democratic Party (SPD), around 77 percent call for increased German government pressure on Israel to ease Gaza’s catastrophic humanitarian situation and end the ongoing conflict that has persisted as october 2023.
The staunchest opposition to diplomatic pressure on Israel comes mainly from supporters of the far-right Alternative for Germany party, with 37 percent questioning calls for tougher measures against Tel Aviv. Though, even within this group, 61 percent still support greater governmental pressure on Israel.
Berlin has historically been one of israel’s staunchest allies. German political leaders have repeatedly emphasized what they describe as Germany’s “ancient responsibility toward Israel stemming from Nazi Germany.”
Bowing to rising public pressure, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said yesterday his government intends to review options for increasing pressure on Israel due to Gaza’s dire humanitarian conditions.
