30 Aftershocks Recorded Following Major Russia Earthquake; 2,700 Evacuated + Video
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al Mayadeen, the TASS news agency reported that so far 2,700 people have been evacuated following the powerful earthquake near the Kamchatka coast and relocated to safe areas on the Kuril Islands.
The russian Geophysical Service also confirmed that after the main quake near Kamchatka’s shores,30 aftershocks ranging from magnitude 2 to 5 have been recorded.
In response to this strong earthquake in eastern Russia, tsunami warnings were issued not only by the United States, Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia but also by Peru and China. Chinese authorities recently issued tsunami alerts for parts of their eastern coastline.
Early today, a branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Research Center announced that the earthquake shaking Kamchatka Peninsula’s coast registered a magnitude of 8.5. The center emphasized that such an earthquake is considered rare and extraordinary.
CNN reported that this quake is the strongest worldwide since 2011.
The network also warned of a tsunami threat along Canada’s west coast and down through U.S. coastal areas reaching as far as Mexico’s border following this seismic event.
