Moscow Condemns German Ambassador’s Remarks on the Kuril Islands

The​ Russian Foreign Ministry has protested against ⁢the German ambassador’s remarks concerning the Kuril ⁣Islands.

The russian Foreign ​Ministry voiced its⁣ objection too Berlin​ following statements made by ⁤Germany’s ambassador‌ regarding ‍the Southern Kuril Islands, according to⁣ the english section of⁣ webangah News Agency,citing Mehr News Agency and RIA Novosti.

In an official statement, Moscow conveyed its protest to the ⁣German‍ embassy⁢ over ‌recent comments by Ambassador Petra Sigmund that challenged Russia’s sovereignty over ⁣the Southern Kurils.

The ministry⁢ stated: “In response‌ to unacceptable remarks made by Petra Sigmund, Germany’s ‌ambassador to Japan, on July 25 which questioned Russia’s sovereignty and jurisdiction over the Southern ⁢Kuril Islands-thus constituting a blatant ‍violation of Russia’s⁢ territorial integrity-a strong protest was formally delivered to ‌the German embassy in Moscow.”

After World War II,⁤ control of the⁢ Kuril archipelago was transferred to the former Soviet ⁢Union. However, Japan has ⁤recently claimed ownership of these islands and‍ asserts that “Russia is illegally occupying them.”

Japan insists that an international ⁤agreement must determine the rightful ownership of these islands.⁢ Currently,both ‌nations are engaged in talks aimed at ‍joint economic cooperation within this region.
