The US-China trade war under former President Trump has pushed India toward warmer ties with China.strengthening relations with Beijing expands India’s diplomatic reach, although experts say it does not signal a fundamental shift in the two countries’ opposing positions on key issues.
The Washington Post, citing analysts, noted that US tariffs have compelled India to rebuild ties with its longtime rival China-a neighbor with whom Delhi shares a disputed Himalayan border.
Pankaj Saran, India’s former deputy national security advisor, stated: “These relations give us more room for strategic maneuvering and flexibility in dealing with the US government rather than leading us into a deadlock. We seek peace in the region, and this might be a good time for that.”
Other analysts beleive Delhi views closer ties with Beijing as an prospect to better navigate its relationship with US President donald Trump.
While improving relations broaden India’s diplomatic scope, experts emphasize ther is no fundamental change in their longstanding contradictory positions on critical matters. The decades-long lack of a clearly defined border between India and China along the Himalayas-divided only by a line of actual control-has been a source of tension.
India has long tried to tap into China’s manufacturing trade markets using its vast workforce; however, Indian factories are not yet ready for this integration.Over the past decade,Prime Minister Modi has pursued an initiative called “Make in India” aimed at strengthening domestic production capabilities.
