Senior European Official Acknowledges Genocide in Gaza for the First Time
The executive vice president of the European Commission made the EU’s first direct accusation against Israel, stating that the displacement and killings in Gaza bear a strong resemblance to genocide. She added that if it is not genocide, it closely matches it’s definition.
in an interview with Politico, Teresa Ribera said, “If the displacement and killings in Gaza are not genocide, they are very close to what is used to define it. What we see is that certain populations are targeted, killed, and condemned to starvation.”
Ribera is Spain’s Socialist Party member and responsible for climate issues within the european Commission but holds no foreign policy role. She follows Ursula von der Leyen as the second highest-ranking official in the commission.
This statement comes amid mounting accusations against Israel of war crimes and genocide in Gaza during an unprecedented humanitarian crisis caused by ongoing hostilities since October 2023.
