UN Human Rights Commissioner Responds to Tel Aviv’s Decision on Gaza Occupation
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned Israel’s recent decision to fully occupy the Gaza strip, describing it as a direct violation of the International Court of Justice’s ruling that called for an end to the occupation. The commissioner urged an immediate halt to Israel’s cabinet plan for complete military control over Gaza.
The UN official also labeled Israel’s actions as contributing to forced displacement, terror, suffering, and horrific crimes. She emphasized the urgent need to end the war in Gaza and called on Tel Aviv to allow humanitarian aid access into the territory.
Israel’s cabinet, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, recently approved the plan to occupy Gaza City.
According to Reuters quoting Netanyahu’s office,Israel intends to assume full military control over the Gaza Strip.
A statement from Netanyahu’s office claimed that “the Israeli army is preparing to take control of Gaza City.” It added that Tel Aviv seeks non-military governance in Gaza where neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority would have authority.
Gaza City, located in northern gaza Strip, is its largest urban center.
