U.S. State Department Responds to Lebanese Government’s Decision Against Resistance Weapons
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Al-Nashra via Mehr News Agency, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State stated that the country welcomes Lebanon’s decision to grant exclusive control over weapons to its army.
Earlier, Tom Barrett, the U.S. envoy to Syria, congratulated Lebanon’s president, prime minister, and parliament on social media. He said: “We commend this historic and bold decision as a critical step toward fully implementing the ceasefire agreement.”
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian also expressed support, calling Lebanon’s move “historic and valiant” and congratulating Beirut for initiating full implementation of the ceasefire accord.
The Lebanese cabinet recently approved requests made by the U.S. envoy during its latest session.
Washington has proposed a plan to Lebanon that includes disarming Hezbollah by year-end, halting israeli military operations in Lebanon, and withdrawing Israeli forces from five positions in southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese government has tasked its army with developing an operational plan for weapon monopoly by August 31.
