Russia Responds to Japan’s Claim on the Kuril Islands
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing RIA Novosti via Mehr News Agency, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, said Sunday that Japan refuses to fully acknowledge the outcomes of post-World War II settlements concerning the Kuril Islands.
The statement from Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson added: Tokyo’s position labeling the Kuril Islands as “illegally occupied” is unacceptable. The timing of these remarks-on the eve of the 80th anniversary of victory over Japan-creates a pessimistic interpretation.
zakharova further emphasized that Moscow finds such rhetoric ineffective against objective realities and deems it unacceptable.
Earlier, Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Russian presidential management, affirmed that “the Kuril Islands are an inseparable part of Russia.” he stressed that terms like “illegal occupation” are unacceptable as these islands belong integrally to Russia.
