UN: Israel Targets Journalists to Kill the Truth
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Al Jazeera via Mehr News Agency, the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression said that the Israeli military targets journalists in an attempt to kill the truth-but they cannot succeed.
He added that journalists exposing Israeli crimes in Gaza are deliberately targeted.
The UN Special Rapporteur noted that more journalists have been killed in Gaza than in any previous conflict.
Mohammed Al-Qiq and Anas Al-Sharif, two prominent Al Jazeera reporters, were killed during an Israeli attack on a press compound at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza.
In the same assault, photojournalists Ibrahim Zahir and Mohammed Noufal, along with another individual, were also killed.
Following the strike on the journalists’ compound in Gaza, the Israeli army claimed that Anas Al-Sharif was a member of Hamas and was therefore targeted for assassination.
Since October 7, Gaza’s 365-square-kilometer strip has become one of the most dangerous places globally for media coverage.
Journalists living and working as Palestinians in Gaza face extreme risks during this bloodiest period yet.
Reporting is severely hindered by internet and power outages. Moreover, they are systematically targeted by Israel to prevent media coverage from revealing evidence of ethnic cleansing committed by occupying forces.
As hostilities escalated 22 months ago, 235 journalists and media activists have been killed across Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem.
