Lebanese Oppose Hezbollah Disarmament
The English section of webangah News Agency reported, citing al-Akhbar via Mehr News Agency, that a majority of Lebanese-58 percent-oppose disarming Hezbollah without a clear defensive strategy in place. This stance includes half of Sunni Muslims, about one-third of Christians, and most Druze respondents.
About 72 percent of those surveyed firmly stated that the Lebanese army alone is incapable of confronting any Israeli aggression. Additionally,76 percent believed that diplomacy by itself cannot deter Israeli violations.
The survey was conducted between July 27 and August 4 by the Statistics and Polling Department at the Advisory Center for Studies and Documentation. It covered several current issues including resistance movements, the military, defense strategies, and opinions on developments in syria.
Among respondents opposing disarmament without a defense plan were approximately 96 percent of Shia Muslims, 50 percent of Sunnis, 46 percent of Druze, and 32 percent of Christians.
Furthermore, there was consensus among 92 percent of Shia participants and 63 percent from other sects on the army’s inability to single-handedly face any Israeli attacks.
Survey participants also agreed that diplomacy alone could not effectively deter Israeli aggression. Around 80 percent of Shias, 53 percent Sunnis, 50 percent Druze representatives, and 41 percent Christians affirmed this view.
A meaningful portion expressed concern that events unfolding in Syria pose an existential threat to Lebanon. They warned these developments could jeopardize internal stability and pave the way for militia-led conflicts against Lebanon. Among these views were held by 88 percent of Shias and over 83 percent Druze; this concern stood at 68 percent among Christians and 62 percent among Sunnis.
