Troika Sends Letter to UN on Triggering Snapback Mechanism Against Iran
According to Mehr News Agency citing Reuters, the UK’s financial Times and France’s Le Monde reported that Paris, London, and Berlin have notified the United Nations of their preparedness to reinstate international sanctions against Tehran if Iran fails to resume talks on its nuclear programme.
Reuters writes that a letter shared by France’s Ministry of foreign Affairs reveals that the foreign ministers of these three countries-known as the “European Troika”-have increased the likelihood of triggering the snapback mechanism against Iran.
The Troika wrote: ”We have clearly stated that if Iran does not demonstrate willingness for a diplomatic solution or take advantage of an extension opportunity by the end of August 2025, we are ready to activate the snapback mechanism.”
The letter also claims that the Troika offered iran a limited extension of snapback activation in exchange for direct negotiations with Washington. However, according to them, tehran has so far given no response to this proposal.
France, Britain, and Germany-alongside china and Russia-remain parties to the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran from which the US unilaterally withdrew illegally in 2018.
Earlier,Majid Takht-Ravanchi,Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran’s Islamic Republic, told Japan’s Kyodo News Agency in an exclusive interview that Tehran would agree to limit its nuclear program only if Washington lifts its unilateral sanctions. He added this limitation would be set for a specific duration. Takht-Ravanchi also expressed willingness toward reducing uranium enrichment levels.
The Iranian diplomat stressed without specifying amounts: “Stopping enrichment is unfeasible.”
