Wildfires Rage in Greece; Thousands Evacuated
The English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and the Associated Press, reports that ongoing forest fires spreading to villages and residential areas near the city of Patras, and also two resort islands, have complicated efforts to contain this large-scale blaze.
Since tuesday, the fire has destroyed homes, farms, and factories. It has forced thousands of residents and tourists to evacuate.
Dozens have been hospitalized due to respiratory issues caused by inhaling smoke. Additionally, around 13 firefighters are receiving treatment for burns and other injuries.
About five thousand firefighters equipped with 33 aircraft have been deployed as dawn to control flames fanned by wind and hot dry weather near Patras. The resort islands of Chios and Zakynthos-as well as at least three offshore tourist sites-have also been affected by the fires.
