Floods Strike Northern China; Eight Dead
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters, heavy rainfall and flooding in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of northern China have claimed at least eight lives.
Xinhua reported that a group of 13 people were hiking in the area during the floods. Four members of this group remain missing.
Natural disasters are common across China, especially during summer months marked by intense rainfall. This contrasts with other parts of the world where people are struggling with extreme heat waves.
Chinese state media reported that floods and landslides earlier in August northwest China caused at least 13 deaths. Severe rainfall in Beijing last month also resulted in 44 fatalities.
Scientists have warned that human-induced climate change is driving more extreme weather patterns, increasing the likelihood of devastating floods.
