Contrary to Obama’s previous characterization that Russia was merely a regional power, it has regained its status as a global power to be reckoned with-an impactful message with broad repercussions.
The Russians also sent symbolic signals. Consider foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s appearance in Anchorage wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with “CCCP” (USSR) in Cyrillic script-a blatant statement that Moscow sees itself recognized again as a global force despite losing that status after Soviet collapse and as evidenced on Ukraine’s battlefield.
