UN Security Council Votes on UNIFIL Mission Extension in Lebanon
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News agency and al-Nashra, Agence France-Presse reported that late on Monday, the UN Security Council will vote on a draft resolution to extend the peacekeeping mission of UNIFIL in southern Lebanon. This follows prior opposition from the United States and Israel to prolonging the mission’s presence.
the draft resolution, proposed by France, calls for a one-year extension of UNIFIL’s mandate. The force has been stationed between Israel and Lebanon since 1978.
In its latest version obtained by AFP,the draft indicates that the Security Council intends to work toward UNIFIL’s withdrawal under the pretext of transitioning security responsibilities exclusively to the Lebanese government in southern Lebanon.
This comes amid ongoing daily Israeli attacks on Lebanon and continued occupation by Israeli forces of five strategic points in southern Lebanon.
