The New York Times: Trump Cancels India Trip
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, The New York Times reported on Saturday that U.S. President Donald Trump no longer plans to visit India later this year to attend the Quad summit.
The American media outlet linked trump’s canceled trip to Delhi with the “breakdown” in relations between the U.S. president and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over recent months.
In a report titled “A Nobel Prize and a Tense Phone Call: How Trump and Modi’s Relationship Fell Apart,” The New York Times quoted individuals familiar with Trump’s schedule stating that after Modi was informed Trump’s visit for the Quad summit later this year was planned, it has now emerged that Trump no longer intends to travel to Delhi in the fall.
No official statements have yet been made by either the United States or India regarding The New York Times’ claims.
India is set to host leaders from Australia, Japan, and the United States for the Quad summit, scheduled for around November in New Delhi.
The Trump administration hosted a Quad meeting in January shortly after Trump took office for his second term at the white House.
Recently, President trump’s 50 percent tariffs against India came into effect. An initial 25 percent tariff was imposed earlier this month as part of Washington’s measures against Delhi; however, as further punishment related to India’s oil purchases from Russia, Trump added an additional 25 percent tariff bringing the total rate to 50 percent.
