Indonesian President Announces Agreement to Reduce Nationwide Violence
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced Sunday that political parties have agreed to reduce a set of special privileges and benefits granted to members of parliament amid ongoing efforts to ease tensions across the nation.
The president stated that this decision came as parties worked together to calm anti-government protests, which have resulted in at least five deaths during some of Indonesia’s most severe unrest in recent decades.
the unrest began last week over objections to parliamentarians’ high salaries and housing allowances. Violence peaked on Friday after police fatally shot a motorcycle driver. Following this incident, government buildings and homes belonging to political party members were attacked or set on fire.
On Saturday, President Prabowo canceled his scheduled trip to China as protests spread from the capital city into other regions. Several local parliamentary buildings were torched amid escalating demonstrations.
Prabowo was expected to attend China’s Victory Day parade on September 3rd commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
