Death Toll in Deadly Afghanistan Earthquake Surpasses 600
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and FRANCE 24, the recent earthquake in Afghanistan has so far claimed at least 622 lives.
The quake struck eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border, causing widespread destruction across many villages.
FRANCE 24, quoting Afghan officials, reports that more than 1,500 people have been injured.
The earthquake measured a magnitude of 6 on the Richter scale and occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday. The US Geological Survey located its epicenter about 35 kilometers north of Basawal village in Mahmand Dara District of Nangarhar Province, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Local reports indicate heavy damage and notable casualties in Darra-i-Noor District of Nangarhar Province.
The quake struck at approximately 11:47 pm local time. About twenty minutes later, a aftershock measuring magnitude 4.5 hit the same area.
