Afghan Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 800
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and The Guardian, Afghan authorities report that more than 800 people have died in last night’s devastating earthquake.
Sharafat Zaman, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health in the caretaker Afghan government, stated that the death toll has exceeded 800 so far.
He added: “The number of casualties and injuries is high,but access for rescue teams to affected areas remains difficult. Though, teams are still on site.”
A short time ago, France24 reported that at least 622 people had died from this deadly earthquake.
The earthquake registered a magnitude of 6.0 and struck shortly after midnight on Sunday. The US Geological Survey located its epicenter about 35 kilometers north of Basawal village in Mohmand Dara district of Nangarhar province at a depth of 10 kilometers underground.
local reports indicate significant damage and casualties in the Darah Noor district of Nangarhar province.
The quake struck at 11:47 p.m.local time, followed by a magnitude 4.5 aftershock approximately twenty minutes later in the same area.
