Seoul Claims 2,000 North Korean Soldiers Killed in Russia
According to the english section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr news Agency and Hindustan Times, South Korean lawmaker Lee Seung-kyun stated after a meeting with the country’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) that approximately 2,000 North korean soldiers sent to support Russia in its war against Ukraine have been killed on the front lines.
The Seoul National Intelligence Service announced in April that at least 600 North Korean troops had been killed in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However,according to new assessments,this agency now claims around 2,000 casualties among North Korean forces.
Western and South Korean intelligence agencies allege that north Korea deployed over 10,000 troops to Russia in 2024. Most were sent to the Kursk region where they not only fought but also supplied Moscow with artillery shells, missiles, and long-range missile systems.
the South Korean lawmaker said NIS believes Pyongyang intended to dispatch up to 6,000 soldiers and military engineers to Russia. currently, about 1,000 are reportedly stationed there.
Earlier this year Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that North Korea would send contractors and mine-clearance units to help rebuild the Kursk region. North Korea has acknowledged deploying forces to Russia as well as casualties among them during the war with Ukraine.
Since confirming these developments, Kim Jong-un has met with families of fallen soldiers offering condolences and pledges of support. Last year during Vladimir Putin’s rare visit to Pyongyang, Russia and North Korea signed a military agreement including mutual defense provisions.
