Afghanistan Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 1,400
The English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera, reported that Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Taliban, confirmed that the death toll from the midnight earthquake on Sunday in Afghanistan has exceeded 1,400.
Mujahid wrote on social media platform X that at least 1,411 people have died in Kunar province, which suffered the most damage from the quake.
He added that more than 3,124 people were injured and over 5,400 homes were destroyed.
The United States Geological Survey located the earthquake’s epicenter about 35 kilometers north of Basawol village in Mahmand dara district of Nangarhar province at a depth of 10 kilometers. The death toll was previously reported as more than 800 yesterday, with officials warning it could rise further.
Local reports indicate significant casualties and damage also occurred in Dara-i Noor district of Nangarhar province.
The quake struck at 11:47 p.m. local time. Around twenty minutes later, a aftershock measuring magnitude 4.5 struck the same area.
