5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Kunar Province, Afghanistan

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Afghanistan and its⁢ border areas with Pakistan.

The English section of webangah news Agency reported, citing Reuters via⁤ Al⁣ Jazeera, that ⁢a 5.5-magnitude earthquake occurred⁤ in southeastern Afghanistan.

the quake ​severely shook‌ Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan and ⁤the ⁤country’s border regions with Pakistan.

So far, no additional information on damages or casualties has been released regarding this ​earthquake.

Earlier,⁤ Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson⁣ for the Afghan interim government, stated that the death toll from the midnight‌ Sunday quake has risen to more ​than 1,400.

Mujahid wrote on the social media ⁣platform X that at least 1,411 people have died in Kunar Province-the hardest-hit area.

He added that ⁣at least ‌ 3,124 people were injured and over 5,400 homes were destroyed.

The United ​States Geological Survey located the quake’s⁢ epicenter⁣ about 35 kilometers north of⁤ Basawal village in Mahmand Dara district of Nangarhar Province ‍at a depth of 10 kilometers underground.
