33 Dead and Injured After Cable Train Derails in Portugal
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and The Guardian, emergency medical sources in portugal confirmed that at least 15 people died and 18 others were injured after one of the cars of Lisbon’s Gloria funicular derailed and fell.
Authorities stated that the identities and nationalities of the victims have not yet been confirmed, though some fatalities are believed to be foreign nationals.
Carlos Moedas, mayor of Lisbon, told reporters, “Today is a sad day for our city. Lisbon is in mourning. This is an extremely tragic event.”
The Guardian reported that images from the scene showed the funicular car wholly destroyed, with rescue teams pulling passengers from the wreckage.
portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed deep regret over the incident and hoped authorities would soon determine its cause.
The railway line, opened in 1885, connects downtown Lisbon near Restauradores Square to the historic Bairro alto neighborhood.
Local media including CNN Portugal reported that during the accident, the car stationed at the bottom of the line was undamaged; however, passengers had to jump out of windows to escape and save their lives.
