Boat Capsizes in Nigeria, Leaving 31 Dead
According too the English section of webangah News Agency,citing Mehr News Agency and Al-Quds Al-Arabi,at least 31 people lost thier lives after a boat sank on a river in central Nigeria.
Husseini Isa, an official from Nigeria’s National Emergency Management agency, told the Associated Press that the overloaded boat struck a tree trunk while traveling in Borgu, Niger State. The vessel had about 90 passengers on board at the time of the accident.
isa said that 50 people have been rescued so far. The number of missing persons remains unknown as search and rescue operations continue.
Fatal boating accidents are common during the rainy season in remote areas across African countries.
Experts point to overcrowding, poor maintenance of boats, and lack of life jackets as primary causes behind such incidents.
Last month,25 people went missing when a boat capsized on a river in Sokoto State,located in northwestern Nigeria.
