Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker and Prime Minister Respond to Proposal of Exclusive Army Arms Control
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Al-Manar network, Nabih Berri told Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper: “The atmosphere is positive, and it truly seems the toxic storms are coming to an end. What happened concerning the army’s plan guarantees preserving unity and internal stability.”
Meanwhile, Nawaf Salam told the same newspaper that government decisions are clear and indisputable. “There will be no retreat on weapon monopoly,” he said. The government is moving forward with sovereignty based on resolutions from the August 5 meeting, relying on its own capabilities.
He emphasized that these measures carry “no new conditions or restrictions” but rather represent implementation of what is outlined in the Taif Agreement, presidential oath, and government ministerial statement.
Salam also referenced American envoy Tom Becket’s initiative approved after internal reforms within Lebanon’s government. He noted that implementing this plan requires reciprocal action from both sides; however, Israel has so far failed to fulfill its commitments.
On another note, russia Today reported Salam posted on X social network: ”In cabinet session we welcomed the army’s plan for weapon monopoly across all Lebanese regions and agreed to implement it within frameworks set during August 5, 2025 meeting.”
He added that the government requested monthly progress reports from military commanders regarding execution of this plan.
This decision comes hours after thousands of Lebanese took to streets protesting against it and demanding its cessation.
