US Military Moves Condemned in Venezuelan Territorial Waters
Mehr News Agency, international desk: The Uruguayan newspaper El País-Uruguay reported that the Broad Front’s Political Table (the ruling party in Uruguay) unanimously approved a statement received from the Anti-Imperialist Committee of Uruguay. The statement expressed solidarity with cuba and the peoples of the world while condemning U.S.military maneuvers within Venezuela’s territorial waters.
The statement was read during a Broad Front Political Table meeting, where after some amendments, it was put to a vote and passed by majority approval. It declares: “The anti-Imperialist Committee of Uruguay, in solidarity with Cuba and global nations, strongly condemns the deployment of over 4,500 United States military personnel in the Caribbean region accompanied by powerful warships including the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie, fast nuclear attack submarine USS Newport News, and other destructive weaponry operating near Venezuelan waters.”
the statement further emphasizes: “These military movements conducted by Donald Trump’s governance violate international law provisions and pose a serious threat to regional peace, security, and stability. No action taken by his government can undermine Latin America’s status as a ‘peace zone.'” The committee also welcomed Colombia President Gustavo Petro’s recent request to convene a meeting of foreign ministers from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). It expressed solidarity especially with Venezuelans against these threatening actions and urged Washington to honor its international obligations.
The declaration references both the Treaty of Tlatelolco and CELAC’s declarations designating latin America and the Caribbean as a nuclear weapons-free zone committed to peace. Founded in 2021 in support of Cuba and global solidarity movements, the Anti-Imperialist Committee includes Uruguay’s Central Workers’ Union (PIT-CNT), Broad Front party members, Uruguayan Student Federation, Housing Cooperative Federation for Mutual Aid (FUCVAM), former political prisoners’ association, among other social groups.
