Seoul Official Visits Washington Following Arrests of Several Hundred South Korean Nationals in U.S
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Yonhap News Agency via Mehr News Agency, South Korean Foreign minister Choo Hyun said Saturday that he might visit the United States to discuss with Washington the detention of hundreds of his country’s citizens by U.S. immigration authorities.
The report states that hundreds of South Korean nationals were arrested at a battery factory in the state of Georgia.
The Foreign Minister added that over 300 out of 457 detainees at this plant are South koreans.
Choo Hyun said, “We are deeply concerned and bear a heavy obligation regarding the detention of our citizens. We will promptly consider dispatching a senior Foreign Ministry official to this factory and, if necessary, I will personally travel to Washington to negotiate with the U.S. government.”
Previously,it was announced that during an immigration enforcement raid,several hundred workers-primarily from South Korea-were detained at a factory in Georgia.
The detainees are reportedly held on charges related to illegal border crossing or overstaying their visas.
