Istanbul Streets Erupt in Protests Against Government
According to the English section of webangah News agency, citing Mehr News Agency, protesters in Turkey clashed with police on Sunday night after security forces entered the Republican People’s Party (CHP) headquarters.
The police action followed a prosecutor’s decision to replace the head of CHP’s provincial branch in Istanbul. Last night,city streets became a stage for protests against President Recep Tayyip erdoğan and his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
The Erdoğan government responded by banning demonstrations in six Istanbul districts and restricting access to social media platforms.
The Russia Today network reported that thousands of opposition supporters gathered across Istanbul on Monday, marking what is believed to be the start of a large-scale sit-in protest.
According to RT’s correspondent in Turkey, police and riot control units deployed extensively at protest sites to maintain order.
Together, social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok have faced significant disruptions amid reports of severe internet slowdowns affecting users nationwide.
YouTube has reportedly been fully blocked. Messaging apps WhatsApp and Telegram are also experiencing failures exceeding 90 percent disruption levels.
