UN: 16.5 Million Syrians Urgently Need Humanitarian Aid
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency via Al Mayadeen, Adam Abdelmuly, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria, stated that about 16.5 million Syrian citizens require humanitarian assistance. This figure excludes 2.5 million displaced persons and refugees who have returned to Syria.
On Tuesday, Adam Abdelmuly said approximately 16.5 million people inside Syria need humanitarian support. This number is along with 2.5 million internally displaced persons and refugees who have returned to their homes, many of which have been destroyed.
He added that syria continues to suffer from a displacement crisis, with more than six million Syrians still internally displaced and over six million refugees scattered worldwide.
Abdelmuly also noted that around 24 percent of homes in Syria have been damaged or destroyed in recent years. Given these severe challenges, the funding received by the United Nations for relief efforts remains insufficient.
In this context, the American magazine Foreign Affairs reported last February that poor coordination regarding refugee returns would have serious consequences for Syria itself, neighboring host countries, and the Syrian refugees.
