Washington: Israel’s Annexation of the West Bank Undermines Agreement with Arab States
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Russia Today, a U.S. official told Axios that Washington officials’ main concern is the potential impact of Israel’s West Bank annexation on the Abraham Accords; an action that could undermine these agreements and harm Trump’s legacy.
In this context, several American and Israeli officials told Axios that Marco rubio, Secretary of State during Trump’s administration, will address Israel’s plans to annex parts of the West bank during his upcoming trip to occupied Jerusalem.
Reports indicate Rubio hinted in closed-door meetings with Israeli officials that he does not oppose annexation and that the U.S.government will not obstruct this move.
However, a senior U.S. official speaking to Axios disclosed that Israeli claims about receiving washington’s green light for annexation have alarmed Trump administration members. These claims are viewed as pressure tactics aimed at limiting White House options.
Axios reports that recently, both the White House and State department held multiple rounds of discussions to establish a clear stance on the annexation plan, aiming to prevent misunderstandings about Washington’s true position.
The U.S.’s concerns grew after Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, signed an “E1” plan on Thursday (September 10) approving expanded settlement construction near occupied Jerusalem in the West Bank.
