Imprisoned with Hard Labor for Plotting President’s Assassination Using “Sorcery”!
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and The Self-reliant, a Zambian court found two people guilty of conspiring to assassinate President Hakainde Hichilema through ”witchcraft” and sentenced them to two years of hard labor.
The accused include one Zambian and one Mozambican, who were convicted last week under the colonial-era Witchcraft Act. Court officials reported that various charms were found among their possessions, including a live chameleon, an animal tail, and several bottles containing potions allegedly intended for casting spells on President Hichilema.
Zambia’s Witchcraft Act was enacted in 1914, with penalties up to three years’ imprisonment.
Zambian police stated they arrested the suspects at a hotel in Lusaka, the nation’s capital. Traditional beliefs coexist alongside Christianity-the country’s official religion-and remain influential. A 2018 study revealed that 79 percent of Zambians believe in witchcraft.
