Kaya Kalas Details Sanctions Against the Zionist Regime
The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaya Kallas, called on EU member states to support proposals suspending the trade chapter of the cooperation agreement between Brussels and the Israeli occupation regime, she said in an interview with Euronews on Tuesday, as reported by webangah News Agency.
Earlier, the European Commission introduced a plan to reimpose customs duties on trade between the EU and Tel Aviv in response to continued Israeli aggression in Gaza.
Kallas confirmed that suspending trade provisions within the EU-Israel cooperation agreement is part of this strategy.
“In 2024, we conducted €42.6 billion worth of trade with Israel,” Kallas stated. “This is a important figure, and when it comes to preferential treatment, 37 percent of that trade benefits from such status. Therefore, this step will certainly come at a high cost for Israel.”
She confirmed the decision involves reinstating customs tariffs on these goods.
Kallas added: “For this proposal to succeed, it must receive qualified majority approval from member states. This means at least one major country-Germany or Italy-needs to back it.”
Hours earlier, the European Union announced that the European Commission would approve new sanctions against Israel on Wednesday.
The Commission also warned that expanding Israeli operations in Gaza will lead to further destruction and loss of life.
The UK Foreign Office previously called for an end to military escalation in Gaza due to its devastating impact on residents there.
