Al-Jolani: Security Agreement with Israel Is a Necessity
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera Qatar, Abu Muhammad al-joulani, leader of the ruling group in Syria, told Reuters that “our talks with Israel may produce tangible results in the coming days.”
He also emphasized that a security agreement with Israel is essential and must include respect for Syrian airspace and territorial integrity.
al-Joulani added, “If the security agreement with Israel is successful, other agreements could also be reached. Though, peace and normalization of relations are not currently on the agenda.”
He further claimed that the United States is not pressuring Damascus to reach an agreement with Israel.
Last night, U.S. news outlet Axios reported quoting an informed source that Israel has presented a detailed proposal for a new security agreement to al-Joulani’s regime. the proposal includes a map covering southwestern Damascus to the border with Israeli-occupied territories.
The report states that Assad Al-Shaybani, Foreign Minister for al-Joulani’s regime, and Ran Dermer, Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister, met on Wednesday in London. The discussion took place in the presence of Tom Barrack, U.S. Special Envoy for Syria.
axios explained that Israel’s proposal divides southwest Damascus into three zones with differing security arrangements for each area.
the American media outlet added that this plan calls for expanding a buffer zone within Syrian territory and prohibits military forces and heavy weaponry along the border with Israeli-occupied lands.
A further detail from Axios reveals that under this proposal all southwestern airspace over Damascus up to the occupied territories would become off-limits for Syrian aircraft.
