Russia: Snapback Mechanism Against Iran Is Illegal

The Russian ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that ⁢the snapback mechanism against Iran is illegal and provocative.

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News agency and Izvestia, Russia has repeatedly emphasized the illegality of‍ european countries’ actions to ⁢reinstate harsh sanctions on Iran under the alleged framework of the United Nations Security Council.

On Saturday, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement declaring⁢ that Moscow has consistently highlighted the provocative and unlawful nature of ‌measures taken by European countries⁣ participating in the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive⁣ Plan of Action) and South‍ Korea’s presidency over the UN Security Council, under their influence.

The Ministry stressed that this vote confirms the ⁤illegality of‍ efforts to invoke “snapback” sanctions and rejects political pressures aimed at Iran.

Russia reiterated its commitment to ⁣continuing constructive dialogue with Iran and insisted on respecting international norms and legal obligations in its relations with the Islamic republic.

It should⁢ be noted that on Friday, the UN Security Council voted on a draft resolution proposing a permanent lifting of sanctions against Iran. ⁢The draft did not secure enough support to pass.

Russia, China, Pakistan, and ⁣algeria ‌were among those who voted in favor‌ of this proposal.

The session took place after⁣ three European countries-Britain,France,and Germany-initiated a 30-day process on ⁢August 28 to restore ⁣UN sanctions⁢ against Iran.

The ‍European ‍troika claimed that Tehran has not complied with commitments under the 2015 nuclear agreement aimed at preventing Iran ‌from acquiring nuclear weapons-a claim Iranian officials have consistently⁤ denied.
