Five SDF Fighters Killed in ISIS Attack on Deir ez-Zor, Syria
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) confirmed that five of their fighters were killed during an ISIS assault in Deir ez-Zor province,northeastern Syria,according too the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Alsumaria via Mehr News Agency.
In a statement released Thursday, the SDF said it repelled an ISIS attack targeting one of their bases in the town of Al-Bahra al-Wusta, east of Deir ez-Zor. During violent clashes early today while foiling this assault, five SDF members lost their lives and another was wounded.
The SDF added that they successfully thwarted the terrorist plot and regained control on the ground. They continue reconnaissance and pursuit operations against militant elements to eliminate them from the area, ensure residents’ security, and eradicate remaining threat centers.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that as Bashar al-Assad’s ousting on December 8, 2024, ISIS attacks have decreased in government-controlled areas but risen within Kurdish-held territories.
ISIS controlled large parts of Syria and Iraq from 2014 until it was expelled from Iraq by 2017 and from Syria by 2019. Even though it no longer controls any territory, it remains active in remote desert regions.
