Iraqi and Russian Foreign Ministers Confer in New York
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and the official website of Iraq’s ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iraqi Foreign minister Fouad Hussein met with Russian foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the UN General Assembly activities in New York.
During their meeting, Lavrov emphasized Russia’s desire to expand trade relations and strengthen investment projects. He highlighted Russian companies’ participation in iraq’s oil sector, cooperation on educational initiatives, offering scholarships to Iraqi students, and organizing training courses for diplomats.
The Russian minister praised Iraq’s government efforts toward development and wished success for its people in upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, Fouad Hussein stated that iraq’s upcoming chairmanship of the Arab Summit presents an important opportunity for exchanging views on regional and international issues.
The two ministers also discussed preparations for a joint summit between Arab countries and Russia scheduled for October 15.
Fouad Hussein expressed Iraq’s intention to broaden cooperation with Russia beyond oil sectors into wider commercial and investment fields. He also called for an increase in scholarships available to Iraqi students.
Both foreign ministers welcomed a recent agreement between Baghdad and erbil governments on resuming oil exports.
The discussions continued with an examination of regional and international developments. The Iraqi foreign minister stressed that any security tension in the region directly affects its geographical and political stability.
They further consulted on Iran-related issues, recent Syrian developments emphasizing a complete political solution inclusive of all groups. They addressed ongoing violence by Israel against Gaza civilians and underscored the urgency of delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza residents.
