Will Tony Blair Lead Gaza’s Interim Government?
The English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, reported that the Financial Times claimed former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has been named as a candidate to head a supervisory body called the “International Transitional Government of Gaza.” It is said that Blair is developing a plan to manage Gaza during the post-war period.
The Times of Israel stated that this transitional government would administer Gaza for several years until authority can be transferred back to the Palestinians.
the plan does not include relocating Palestinians-an issue considered off-limits in negotiations by many parties.
BBC World reported that Tony Blair, who led Britain into the 2003 Iraq War, has participated in high-level talks with the United States and other stakeholders concerning Gaza’s future.
In August, Blair attended a meeting with then-US President Donald Trump and others to discuss Gaza’s future. According to Sky News, this initiative enjoys support from the White House.
The Economist noted one key objective for this interim government is obtaining UN authorization to act as “the supreme political and legal authority” in Gaza during its first five years. If approved, Blair would form a seven-member council supported by a secretariat staffed with 25 members. Arab countries are expected to finance this body’s operational costs.
Diplomatic discussions surrounding the futures of both Gaza and the occupied West Bank have intensified in recent weeks. Leading up to last week’s UN General Assembly session, London formally recognized Palestine as an independent state.
