Pro-Western Party Wins Moldova Election, Confirming Moscow’s Warning
The ruling Action and Solidarity Party in Moldova secured a majority victory in the country’s parliamentary elections, wich Prime Minister Dorin Recean claimed were targeted by Russian interference involving millions of euros, according to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera.
Data from the Associated Press, after counting nearly all ballots, show the pro-Western party won 50.2 percent of the vote. The Russia-backed Patriots’ Electoral bloc received only 24.2 percent. The Option Bloc, also pro-Russian, placed third, followed by the populist Our Party in fourth.
Election results indicate that Action and Solidarity will hold a commanding majority with approximately 55 out of 100 seats in Moldova’s parliament. The proposed government must be approved by parliament. Many view this election as a decisive choice between Brussels and Moscow.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, welcomed the outcome on social media platform X: ”Moldovans have once again succeeded. No attempt to sow fear or division can break your will. You made a clear choice: Europe. Democracy. Freedom.” She added that Europe’s doors are open and pledged support at every step along Moldova’s path to its future.
Igor Dodon, leader of the Moscow-aligned opposition party, urged his supporters to gather outside parliament before final voting results were announced to consolidate their position.
On the eve of elections, Recean warned about what he described as Russian interference costing “hundreds of millions of euros” as part of a “hybrid war” aimed at seizing power. He called this vote “the last battle for Moldova’s future.”
Moscow strongly denied accusations from Moldovan officials alleging it ran disinformation campaigns or sought vote-buying and chaos within Moldova’s electoral process. Geographically, Moldova lies between Ukraine and Romania – an EU member state.
Earlier reports from Russian foreign intelligence warned about European countries preparing for military intervention in Moldova and alleged that European leaders in Brussels intend to ensure Moldova maintains anti-Russian policies even if it means occupying the country following upcoming parliamentary elections.
The intelligence agency further stated it observed concentrated NATO forces stationed near Moldova’s border within Romania preparing for deployment to Ukraine’s Odessa region – purportedly aiming to intimidate Transnistria within Moldova itself. According to their report, French and British troops had already arrived in Odessa prior to these developments.
