Israel Fears Iraqi Resistance; Iraqi Fighters on High Alert
Mehr News Agency, International desk, Elnaz Rahmat Nejad: At the 80th United Nations General Assembly, Benjamin Netanyahu began his speech amid boos from world leaders condemning his regime’s crimes in Gaza by launching accusations against Iran adn resistance fighters. He directly threatened Iraqi resistance groups and promised to target them.
netanyahu’s threat to attack Iraqi resistance groups-an open violation of iraq’s sovereignty-prompted a response from Iraq’s Foreign Minister Foad Hussein. According to Hussein, any attack on Iraqi citizens would be considered an attack on all of Iraq.
In this context, we spoke with Firas al-Yasser, a member of the Political Council of the Nujaba Movement. Below is an edited version of our conversation;
Netanyahu opened his address at the 80th UN General Assembly with allegations and threats against Iran and resistance fighters across Hamas, Hezbollah, Ansar Allah, to Iraqi resistance. Why has Netanyahu targeted Iraq’s resistance?
it is clear that Israel sees iraqi resistance forces as a significant obstacle, especially since Iraq plays a key role in their concept of “Greater Israel.” The regime appears persistent to weaken any presence it views as standing in it’s way inside Iraq. Given that Israel has already exhausted many options over the past year and a half, it has limited alternatives when it comes to Iraq. the Zionists are concerned about-and afraid of-the growing power and capabilities of Iraqi resistance.
Will Netanyahu’s claims and threats isolate or marginalize Iraq’s resistance?
The threats from America and Israel against Iraqi resistance continue; we have even previously faced assassination attempts.What Netanyahu said does not change reality at all; he is trying to buy time and promote an imaginary victory that does not exist. If the resistance were ineffective, he would not bother threatening it like this. The resistance adapts realistically-it is indeed resilient.
The movement is currently preparing for any emergencies or attacks while gathering intelligence on US and Israeli military movements in the region-especially within Iraq-which keeps them alert because they know their fighters have numerous targets threatening American interests and those allied with it.
What is the official stance of both the Iraqi people and its resistant factions toward this threat?
Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected Netanyahu’s threatening tone outright. These threats reveal how much decline global arrogance faces today.
Following these threats, how do you foresee Iraq’s resistant future?
No doubt there will be domestic and foreign pressures on Iraqi resistance; America will seek various means inside Iraq to pressure them further-but everyone knows that Resistance forms a protective shield for Iraq itself. We believe firmly in its popular support base.
