China Opposes Sanctions and Pressure on Iran, Calls US the Root of the Crisis
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing the Chinese Foreign Ministry website, Guo Jiaqun, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, stated at a press briefing on tuesday that the UN Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution jointly proposed by Beijing and Moscow to extend Resolution 2231. He explained that the draft aimed to create more time and space for diplomatic negotiations on Iran’s nuclear issue and establish favorable conditions for ultimately reaching a political solution.
Guo added that applying pressure through snapback sanctions is unproductive and has severely undermined political and diplomatic efforts toward resolving Iran’s nuclear issue.
The spokesperson continued: “The United States’ unilateral exit from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is at the root of today’s crisis. China believes that peacefully resolving Iran’s nuclear issue through political and diplomatic means remains the only acceptable option. We oppose coercion, sanctions, or any form of pressure.” He urged Washington and European countries to demonstrate political sincerity, increase their diplomatic efforts, return negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program to a constructive political path, and prevent further escalation of tensions.
Guo concluded by saying China will maintain its objective and fair stance while playing a constructive role in achieving an agreement addressing all parties’ legitimate concerns.
