According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, Sputnik reported that social media shared footage showing Israeli soldiers raising thier flag and singing their national anthem, “hatikvah,” in QuneitraS Assad Square.
This act has sparked anger and sorrow among many Syrians, as Quneitra holds symbolic significance for them.
After the city was liberated in 1974, then Syrian President Hafez al-Assad raised his country’s flag at this exact location. Since then, it has been called “Assad Square,” later also known as “Al-Alam Square” (Flag square).
Reports indicate that this scene was recorded in a destroyed section along the front lines where the Israeli army established a new base following the withdrawal of Syrian government forces last December. Syrian sources also state that Israeli forces have set up a checkpoint at Al-Alam Square and are controlling pedestrians.
