Macron: Use of Russian Assets Must Respect International Law
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday that Paris is investigating a suspected violation involving the oil tanker Boracay, believed to be part of the so-called Russian “shadow fleet” involved in trading Russian oil.
French officials have remained silent about this vessel, which is currently anchored near the western city of Saint-Nazaire.
the Brest prosecutor’s office announced on tuesday that an investigation has been opened after the crew failed to provide documentation proving the ship’s nationality, but no further details were given.
Speaking at a European Union summit in denmark, Macron said collective assessments estimate that Russia’s “shadow fleet” includes between 600 and 1,000 vessels.
The French president also stated today that any use of frozen Russian assets by the European Union for Ukraine’s benefit must respect international law. He expressed alignment with Belgian prime Minister Alexander De Croo-who has criticized aspects of the EU Commission’s initiative-on this issue.
emmanuel Macron told reporters: “When assets are frozen, international law must be respected. This is exactly what Belgium’s prime minister also emphasized.”
