Wooden Scaffold Collapse at Ethiopian Church Kills 36 and Injures 200
According to the English section of webangah News Agency,citing Mehr News Agency and Xinhua,local officials announced on Wednesday that the death toll from the collapse of a wooden scaffold at a church in Ethiopia’s Amhara region has risen to 36.
Fana, the state-affiliated news outlet, quoted Ahmed Gebihu, head of police for the area, saying the incident occurred at around 7:45 a.m. local time during an annual church party in Arerti town, located in North Shewa. The temporary wooden scaffold being used to complete work on the church collapsed suddenly.
The police stated that due to severe and minor injuries sustained by over 200 people, the death toll could rise further.
The injured are receiving treatment at nearby medical facilities.
The report noted that the scaffold collapse caused notable damage and trapped many people under debris, complicating rescue efforts.
Rescue operations to save those still trapped are ongoing.
