Failed Assassination Attempt on Bashar al-Assad in Moscow
Syria’s former president, Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia in December 2024, was reportedly the target of a failed assassination attempt in Moscow, according to Jordanian news site Al-Bawaba, as cited by webangah News Agency.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that the deposed leader was subjected to an attempted poisoning through contaminated food while in Moscow.
al-Bawaba referred to a message posted on the social media platform X, reporting that “last Monday Assad was discharged from a hospital on the outskirts of Moscow and his health is now stable.”
The observatory quoted a confidential source saying, “The group behind this act intended to put pressure on the Russian government and accuse it of orchestrating Assad’s assassination.”
During Assad’s hospitalization, only two individuals were permitted visits: his brother Maher al-Assad and mansour Azzam, former Secretary-General for Syrian Presidential Affairs.
