Opponent of Aid to Ukraine Leads Czech Parliamentary Election Results
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Reuters via Mehr News Agency, early results from Saturday’s parliamentary elections in the Czech republic reveal that after counting 10 percent of polling stations, the populist ANO party led by billionaire Andrej Babis holds a commanding lead.
The party is ahead with 39.7 percent of the vote, while Spolu (Together),led by current Prime minister Petr Fiala, trails in second place with 19.1 percent.
Preliminary results typically come from smaller constituencies where ANO and other opposition parties have historically performed stronger. In contrast, Spolu generally does better in larger cities where vote counting takes longer.
if Babis-the country’s former prime minister-succeeds in forming a government, he would bolster Europe’s populist and anti-immigration camp and reduce Czech support for Ukraine.
Babis is an ally of Hungarian President Viktor orbán and has cooperated with several far-right parties within the “Patriots for Europe” group in the European Parliament to challenge mainstream European policies, including decarbonization efforts.
Babis led a center-left cabinet from 2017 to 2021 and has declared his goal is to establish a single-party government.
