Western-Backed Protesters Storm Georgian President’s Residence + Video
According to the English section of webangah news Agency,citing Sputnik via Mehr News Agency,western-aligned opposition protests in Georgia turned violent on Saturday. In Tbilisi, the capital, protesters attempted to storm the presidential residence by crossing iron barricades.
A television report added that police used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
Earlier on election day, opposition demonstrators marched in Tbilisi, calling it a “peaceful revolution” during local government (municipal) elections.
The TASS news agency reported that protesters threw stones at the presidential palace and hurled incendiary devices at police forces in Tbilisi.
The Georgian Ministry of Internal affairs declared that the gathering had ”exceeded legal limits.”
Protesters entered the premises of Georgia’s presidential residence and attempted to seize control there.
Sputnik noted that additional special forces units were deployed near the presidential palace after demonstrators breached metal barriers.
The security forces used water cannons against protesters close to the palace grounds.
A RIA Novosti correspondent reported that a group called ”European-Georgian Boys” continued throwing stones at Georgia’s presidential residence despite warnings from special forces.
Carrying European Union flags, protesters sought entry into the presidential building while security personnel tried to maintain order and enforce laws.
According to Russia Today news agency, masked rioters waving EU and Ukrainian flags set fire to chairs and tables near Tbilisi’s presidential palace.
EU-supporting rioters set streets ablaze as riot police surrounded them in central Tbilisi.
