Trump’s Latest Claim Justifying National Guard Deployment to Portland
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Anadolu,US president Donald Trump is seeking to deploy the National Guard to Portland in response to what he describes as rising crime. Trump claimed that a rebellion is emerging in the city.
Speaking to Newsmax, Trump said, “if you look at what’s happening in Portland, you’ll realise a rebellion is forming. I mean a full-on rebellion.”
He also criticized Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker over ongoing gun violence in Chicago. “chicago takes multiple casualties every weekend under Pritzker,” Trump said.”It’s ridiculous, and then he goes on TV and tells everyone how safe chicago is!”
Trump’s comments come amid renewed debate over the federal government’s role in handling violent crime in major cities and whether deploying National Guard troops without state approval is lawful.
“We will make Portland safe,” Trump added. “I can restore security there. So why shouldn’t we allow the military-meaning the National Guard or any other forces-to enter?”
Karin Immergut, a district judge appointed by Trump, temporarily blocked his efforts for a second time from sending National Guard troops to Portland. She ruled that the federal government attempted to circumvent an earlier court order by deploying forces from California’s National Guard.
While the White House claims these forces are sent to protect federal employees from “violent riots” and “lawlessness,” Democratic leaders-who largely govern these states and cities-argue their jurisdictions are being unlawfully targeted and deny they are hotspots of crime.
